The Road Safety component of the FRDP provides support to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

in respect of pilot safe corridor roads and capacity building & training of FRSC staff. It also provides support to FCT in safety improvements by providing pedestrian overhead bridges and re-design of other junctions. The project component is divided into three sub-components:

RSDT Studies/Consultancy: This includes Completion

of Baseline Traffic Data for rehabilitation and Periodic Maintenance Roads and starting of follow–up traffic data amongst other things.

2. Support to Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

on Road Safety Intervention through: Procurement of Communication and Road Safety Equipment; Procurement of Vehicles and Equipment; as well as Procurement of Consultancy services for Capacity Building and Training Program. The programme is currently ongoing

3. Support to Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)

on Road Safety Intervention by providing: Procurement of Construction Works of Six Pedestrian Overhead Bridges and Procurement of Construction Works on Traffic Management Measures

RSDT CONSTRUCT SIX (6) PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE IN FCT

The growing number of Pedestrians along the express ways within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as well as the increasing number of accidents involving road users crossing the highways has raised major concern among various stakeholders. This development required for immediate measures to be taken to safeguard the lives of Nigerians crossing these roads.

The Ministry expressed hope that when completed, the pedestrian bridges will reduce pedestrian accidents and traffic related fatalities while promoting the behaviour of our urban commuters in the FCT by way of using pedestrian bridges.

In the first phase of the exercise, the construction of Six (6) pedestrian bridges commenced in the following areas with high pedestrian traffic

  • Nnamdi Azikiwe Express way by Tafawa Balewa Way
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe Express way by Olusegun Obasanjo Way
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe Express way by Ahmadu Bello Way
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe Express way by Shehu Shagari Way
  • Shehu Yar-Adua Way by Okonjo Iwela way
  • Shehu Yar-Adua Way by Ladi Kwali way

The ministry enjoined all stakeholders to rededicate themselves anew to the task of successfully delivering the project within the scheduled project time frame seeing that the Federal Government accords great importance to the project which is expected to bestow significant safety to an eagerly expectant population.

Under the Road Safety component of the FRDP,

the RSDT provides for support to FCT in safety improvements by providing pedestrian overhead bridges and upgrade of traffic signals at some junctions. It is against this backdrop that the Federal Government flagged off the construction of six pedestrian bridges in the FCT to address the frequent cases of accidents leading to the death of pedestrians in Abuja with a view towards achieving one of the key objectives of the FRDP – Reduction in accident related fatalities.

The occasion underlines the Federal Roads Development objective to improve safety level on the project roads by 50%. It is in realisation of these objectives that the World Bank approved the provision of $10,000,000 (Ten million dollars) for the construction of six Bridges along some selected roads in the Federal Capital. Thus is financed 100% from the FRDP credit.

The Ministry of Works reiterate that the project which is undertaken by the RSDT was part of the Road safety components of the Federal Road Development Initiative aimed at improving the safety of roads within the Federal Capital Territory.
